New York Fashion Week is alive and well, although Saint Laurent "killed the game", the season is off and running with some beautiful collections.  February 11th was the official start date and we couldn't be more thrilled to see such beautiful layers of textures and patterns showcased in elongated and flowing silhouettes.  Here are some of our favorite pieces from the first day.

RIP NYFW - Saint Laurent just killed the game

Last night at the Los Angeles Palladium Theatre, Hedi Slimane showcased his Fall 2016 Men's RTW and Pre-Fall Women's collections for Saint Laurent...  A chronicle of jaw-dropping and stunningly lavish 1970s David Bowie inspired designs.  Lanky models graced the runway decked out in glitter makeup, blunt-bangs and rocker-chic hairdos.

Slimane kicked off Fashion Week with this year's trends of plaids, animal prints, velvets, shearlings and power suiting.  Autumn/Fall 2016 Fashion Week just began, and ended, with this beautiful collection!

Rock is Dead? #LongLiveRock John Varvatos RTW 2016 collection NYFW

Rock will never Die. Rock is a spirit. A way of living. A point of view in a world about Freedom. About Rebellion. Achieving greatness in your own way. It’s a spirit that runs through you. It’s alive and well and happening across the globe. kicking a**, taking names, & F***** sh** up!

Provocative, individualistic and rebellious are just some adjectives that describe John Varvatos's RTW 2016 Fall show.  The designer dismantled his Bowery CBCG's store, creating a labyrinth of rooms with models interspersed throughout, including in the dressing rooms and amidst mannequins, the first of which were in coffins.  Rock n' Roll classics played in each room, the last being an angelic white room dedicated to the iconic David Bowie.

Although the theatrics were monumental, Varvatos's collection was direct and true.  His diverse textures, fabrics, and ornamentation suits customers of different ages and professions (pun intended).  Double-breasted suits, elongated cardigans, and tuxedo jackets in abstract prints, shearlings, calfskins, and jacquards blended classics with the exotic.   Varvatos deserves a round of applause for his contemporary take on a tangled and refreshing New York fashion show.

New Year, New Generation!

The 2016 season has reevaluated, revolutionized and revamped the status of "Bright Old Things", by focusing on and catering to the Baby Boomer market with high disposable incomes and minds of their own.  The past decade was ruled by Millennials with hashtags, fast fashion, and impatience, but this season age is irrelevant.  It is finally time to pay homage to the powerful and elegantly mature older generation!  The word youth is but a euphemism for relevant and adaptable, the excitement behind experiencing something new and is simply a state of mind.

Given the average model age of 17, Designer Alexis Mabille admiringly played with age, creating a Top Model reunion with legends such as Carmen Kass, (age 37) Estelle Lefébure, (age 49) and Debra Shaw (age 39).   Mabille described his decision as a "tribute to timeless beauty" and delivered a refreshing and relatable catwalk, redefining the obsession with youthfulness.

Other designers such as Céline and Kate Spade have also caught wind of the "silver revolution", incorporating legends such as Iris Apfel and Joan Didion into their editorial and advertising campaigns.  Speaking of Iris Apfel,  I was lucky enough to style the lovely and quirky Iris when I was Fashion Director at Avenue magazine.  Her wisdom and personality were infectious...  Iris is leading the #silverrevolution by storm.

Fashion Icon, Rock Legend

A bigger than life star and one incredibly talented soul, David Bowie was far more than a fashion icon and rock legend. Challenger, trendsetter, industry leader, Bowie has left his mark on this world in the shape of a lightening bolt and has stolen the hearts of millions. I am so thankful for having assisted on his Thursday's Child music video way back when -- he is a legend who will forever hold a special part of my heart.

Trendy Tips From NYCSTYLIST

No. 6 The Tuxedo

Tuxedo pieces are quickly becoming the new wardrobe staple! From jumpsuits to dresses, these pieces mimic the menswear aesthetic with a super fem flare. Tuxedos as a 'men's only' is a thing of the past.

The Trend          Street Style        Get the look

From Left to Right: Akris, Tom Ford Suit, Stuart Weitzman Heels, Anndra Neen ClutchCutler and Gross Sunglasses, Vitaliano Bow Tie, Valentino Pumps

With altered silhouettes, classic menswear elements transform to flatter and accentuate glamorous womenswear. A large bowtie, patent leather stilettos, and angular sunnies are all the tuxedo needs.

From Left to Right: Balmain, Tuxedo Dress, Equipment Sweater, BCBG Coat, YSL Lipstick

The tuxedo dress not only shows off some leg, but allows stylish versatility too! Worn with a dramatic neckline to let the peak lapel pop, and layered with contrasting colors, the tuxedo dress is a chic standout.

From Left to Right: Milly, Tuxedo Vest, M2Malletier  Purse, Stella McCartney Platform Sneakers, Isabel Marant Pant

Worn with a pair of matching skinnies and exaggerated platform sneakers or oxfords, tuxedo vests go rogue by creating a daring vibe.

Trendy Tips From NYCSTYLIST

No. 5 Athletic Shoe

Who says sneakers can’t be high class? Wave goodbye to Lulu Lemon and ditch that three quarter zip, at least until tomorrow morning’s workout. And introduce your favorite athletic shoe to your most adored ensemble for an outfit that is comfy chic!

The Trend           Street Style

From Left to Right: New Balance, Training Sneaker

Colorful New Balance sneakers have been dominating the street style scene! Worn with denim and sweaters or a patterned jumpsuit, the sneakers pull the outfit together in a way stilettos never could!

From Left to Right: Lanvin, High Top Sneaker

High top sneakers have a place well beyond the basketball court! Paired with super fem pieces like a mini skirt and soft scarf  is the equivalent of a three-pointer in street style do’s!

From Left to Right: Christian Louboutin, Low Top Sneaker

A pair of spiked sneakers will forever change the way you look at your favorite little black dress. The simplicity of the dress welcomes your wildest pairs.

From Left to Right: Stella McCartney, Platform Sneaker

Athletic inspired platforms are a dream come true for women everywhere, and Stella McCartney’s take on this classic style lends to an edgy vibe bringing to life the unimaginable!

TRENDY TIPS FROM NYCSTYLIST

No. 4 the puffer coat

A versatile coat is a winter must! Worn casually for a workout in the park, with a trendy flare for a day out in the city, or even styled for the office, the puffer jacket is a closet essential. With so many options, you’re sure to find one that is simply irresistible!

The Trend           Street Style

From Left to Right: Moncler, Long Puffer

The long puffer, furnished with fur trim, is classic. Worn with a graphic tee and beanie, this luxe coat also works casually.

From Left to Right: Moncler, Patterned Puffer

The patterned puffer downplays the puff factor and ups the style factor. Best worn with a pop of color and a little something that shines!

From Left to Right: Sacai Luck, Sport Puffer

The sport puffer is one of our favorites! Paired with something delicate and poppy, this puffer is the real MVP!

From Left to Right: Burberry, Belted Puffer

The oversized puffer not only combats the cold, it is also one shapely piece! With a sleek and fitted ensemble, the belted puffer creates the perfect silhouette with balanced proportions!

TRENDY TIPS FROM NYCSTYLIST

No. 3  70's Flare

The best of the seventies has made its return, but this is not how your mother wore it! Classics have been revived and redefined, combining twenty-first century chic with the fluidity of decades past.

The Trend             Street Style

From Left to Right: Alice & Olivia, Bell Bottom Pant

We love the fit and flare aesthetic of the classic bell bottom, but you must show it off properly! Pairing with a bloussant blouse, platforms, and a sleek cross-body bag is just the way to go!

From Left to Right: Etro, Maxi Dress

The free-flowing maxi dress brings the fun-loving vibes of the seventies into 2015! With peasant or bishop sleeves, patterned or solid, this dress stuns every time.

From Left to Right: Saint Laurent, Platforms

The only thing higher than seventies fashions are platforms. A pair of  iconic Saint Laurent Classic Tribute sandals paired with round sunnies and a thick headscarf add seventies sensations to a simplistic look of black and leather.

From Left to Right: The Row, Row Coat

Worn classically, or casually, the row coat is a stylist’s dream. Sneakers, cuffed pants, sunglasses and the quilted bag make this row coat read sporty chic.
